Before I get into the topic of discussion, the dangers of the Law of Attraction, let me just say that I am not saying believing in the Law of Attraction is wrong and/or that there is something wrong with it.
What I am saying, though, is that if you don’t know who you are or your purpose, then you can easily get caught up in it and that can be detrimental to your own growth.
Throughout this blog post, I’m going to walk you through, using my own personal experience, how it can be dangerous. First things first, let’s look at what the Law of Attraction is.
What is the Law of Attraction
According to some folks, the Law of Attraction (LOA) is the most powerful law in the universe. Of course, I found this language on the websites of those who have made millions and millions of dollars by teaching on the LOA.
That said, the Law of Attraction says that you will attract into your life, whatever you choose to focus on. Simply put, like attracts like.
That sounds simple enough, right?
If I focus on love, then I’ll have more love in my life. When I focus on having an abundant amount of money, then I’ll have more money. If I focus on being skinny and healthy, then I’ll be skinny and healthy.
Being skinny and healthy AND having an abundant amount of money was my focus and guess what? It didn’t quite work out that way for me.
In fact, when I focused on being skinny and healthy and having an abundance of money, I got bigger and bigger and dug myself into debt.
The Law of Attraction is a By-product
One of the things I want to point out before sharing my story is that the Law of Attraction is a by-product of a universal law. To learn more about the Law of Vibration, please review the video below. The video comes from my course, A Journey Into Purpose Consciousness.
How I Got Started
To be honest with you, I don’t remember the exact moment that I was introduced to the Law of Attraction. I believe it was around 2016/2017. To some people, I’m still fairly new but I’ve learned so much.
What drew me to the Law of Attraction was its ease of use. All I had to do was “think happy thoughts” and I’d be happy.
To lose weight, all I had to do was envision myself at my perfect weight. I didn’t have to pay attention to what I was eating or work out.
It was the same thing with money. All I had to think about was wealth and it would come to me. If I thought about lack, then I’d receive more lack.
For me, this was dangerous because it lead me to ignoring two important truths about my life:
#1) I was a compulsive eater
#2) I was being irresponsible with money
Being a Compulsive Eater
For at least a year or two before learning about the Law of Attraction, I had this feeling that I had a big problem with food. Of course, I wasn’t ready to deal with it at the time but it continued to surface for me.
When I learned about the Law of Attraction and how easy it was for me to simply not think about the problem and it would go away, I was excited.
Every time a thought about eating and or food would come to mind, I’d simply begin to think another thought. I’d think about how I was healthy and food is not good or bad, it’s neutral.
I carried on in this way for about a year into my LOA journey. Three days before I was schedule to run the Chicago marathon in 2018, I injured my back. I realized that I was practicing avoidance.
Being Financially Irresponsible
I wish I only had one example showcasing the dangers of the Law of Attraction. This one is very interesting because I spent 15 years successfully climbing the corporate ladder in finance and accounting.
Prior to learning about the LOA, I was responsible with my finances. Since I grew up poor, I never wanted to be in a situation where I didn’t have my needs met.
As such, I made responsible decisions relating to my finances. However, going back to the supposed ease of use of the Law of Attraction, I began to spend irresponsibly.
For the record, I am 100% responsible for the choices that I made. I am not trying to mitigate my responsibility in any way. Remember, I am speaking to the dangers of this principle.
I would have thoughts about wealth and abundance and say to myself that “money flows to me easily and effortlessly.” By doing so, I was ignorantly spending money because I didn’t have the patience to wait.
I did all of this in the name of the Law of Attraction.
The Danger of the Law of Attraction
As I said before, I’m not saying that the LOA is wrong and those who believe in it are ignorant, I want to point out the fact that the law is not going to help you when you are trying to use it as a way of avoidance.
Not only that, most of the teachers are telling you to just “think happy thoughts” and your life will be happy because like attracts like.
The problem is, all of our thoughts and subsequent emotions, whether they are good or bad, carry information. When we neglect any of them, we fail to receive the information they are relaying to us.
I’m Healed
When I finally stopped ignoring my eating disorder because I was afraid that I would make it worse, I was able to heal from it. My stress levels were a contributing factor to my compulsive eating.
Even deeper than that, I realized that it stemmed from self-hate as a result of childhood trauma. And the same thing happened with my spending habits. It was all related to past wounds.
To bring it home, the Law of Attraction only works when you are operating from a place of healing and wholeness. If you are trying to use it to avoid some real-life, current and past wounds, it is extremely dangerous.
